Reignite Your Fire: Why It’s Not Motivation You’re Lacking—It’s Inspiration

Let’s get real for a minute. How many times have you woken up, stared at your ceiling, and asked yourself, "How am I going to get through another day of this grind?" Maybe you’ve even convinced yourself that if you could just find a little more motivation, you’d be golden. You’d finally crush those goals, climb that ladder, and feel like you’ve made it. But here’s the thing: Motivation is not the answer.

Before we dive deep, I want you to think of a word—just one word—that inspires you to get out of bed every morning. Write it down. Tuck it away for later. Because trust me, we’re going to circle back to it.

The Motivation Trap: Why It’s Not Enough

Motivation. It’s the buzzword we’re all chasing, but here’s the dirty little secret: Motivation is like a sugar rush. It gives you that quick hit, but it burns out just as fast, leaving you hungry for more. And why? Because motivation is driven by external factors. It’s all about the deadline, the praise, the promotion, the recognition. Sure, some of these things seem great—who doesn’t want a fat paycheck or a shiny new title? But when that’s all you’re chasing, you’re setting yourself up for burnout.

Let’s get real with an example. Have you ever stayed up way too late, burning the midnight oil just to meet a deadline and get that nod of approval from your boss? Maybe you got the recognition you were after, but how long did that high last? A day? A week? If you’re nodding along right now, you know exactly what I’m talking about. That’s the trap of motivation—it's fleeting, and it keeps you coming back for more, like a hamster on a wheel.

Inspiration: The Real Game Changer

Now let’s flip the script and talk about inspiration. Unlike motivation, inspiration comes from within. It’s that fire in your belly that’s fueled by passion, purpose, and a deep alignment with your values. It doesn’t need constant replenishment because it’s self-sustaining. It’s doing what you love because you love it—not because someone’s watching, not because you’re going to get a gold star, but because it lights you up from the inside.

For me, this isn’t just theory—it’s my life. As most people know, nurses have an insanely high burnout rate, and I was right on that track. It wasn’t until I unknowingly found what lit me up that I discovered I wasn’t missing motivation—I was missing inspiration.

It’s so easy to just go through the motions, to put up walls when you’re in an emotionally exhausting line of work. I was working with hospitalized pregnant patients who weren’t in labor, but who were scared out of their minds because it wasn’t just their health at stake—it was their baby’s too. Being in the hospital often makes you feel like you have no control. Doctors talk at you, not with you. They tell you what’s going to happen, and before you know it, you’re being poked, prodded, and rushed into decisions. It feels like you’re at their mercy.

As a nurse, my job has always been to educate and advocate for my patients. That was my favorite part—especially when I could see the worry on their faces after a doctor dropped some high-level explanation and walked out of the room, leaving them confused and anxious. I’d step in, break it down, help them fully understand, and remind them that, when it’s not a life-or-death situation, they have a say in what happens.

“You don’t feel comfortable doing a C-section this early? Let’s talk about it. Worried because someone told you the strip looks funny, but they didn’t explain what it meant? Let me break it down for you.”

Those conversations fueled me. Seeing the relief in their eyes, knowing I’d given them back a little bit of power, it lit me up inside. Even before they thanked me, my tank was already refueled. My fiery passion was relit. I always thought my passion was just helping people, but that wasn’t enough. When I really got down to the nitty-gritty, I realized it was about empowering women to take back their power in situations where they felt powerless.

That realization changed everything. I knew I wanted to help more than just the women within the walls of my unit. And once I combined that with my sister’s passion—inspiring people to find what truly drives them—I knew we were onto something powerful. This wasn’t just a job anymore; it was a calling to reach and empower women everywhere.

The Revolution Starts Here: Taking Back Your Power

So, remember that word you wrote down earlier? Take a look at it again. Is it inspiration, or is it motivation? If it’s motivation, dig deeper. Once you find your inspiration, ask yourself, “What can I do at work today that aligns with this?” You might be amazed at how you can infuse even the smallest tasks with purpose, no matter what career you’re in. You don’t always have to switch career trajectories like I did, but knowing you have the power to shape your journey? That’s exhilarating. The possibilities are endless.

This is your wake-up call. We’ve been conditioned to believe that success is about hitting goals and reaching milestones, but let’s be honest—those are just pit stops on a much bigger journey. Real fulfillment doesn’t come from ticking boxes on a checklist. It comes from living a life that’s aligned with your true self, your passions, and your purpose.

So let’s start a revolution, right here, right now. It’s time to stop running on autopilot, stop chasing external validation, and start living from a place of inspiration. When you reignite that spark and follow your true passions, the floodgates of opportunity will swing wide open. Because when you live and work from a place of inspiration, success isn’t just possible—it’s inevitable.

So, are you ready to let it burn, baby?
